Drywall and Spray Foam Insulation, Built for Treasure Valley Homes and Job Sites

We are HD Drywall, a family-run drywall and spray foam insulation contractor working across Boise and the wider Treasure Valley. Grant, Logan, and our crew handle the full arc of a job — hanging and finishing board, sealing an attic with closed-cell foam, patching water damage, or insulating a new commercial shell — and we run each one the way we would want it run in our own home. That means clean sequencing, honest timelines, and a finish that still looks right long after the drywall dust settles.

Most calls we take fall into one of two buckets: someone building or remodeling who needs the whole envelope done correctly, or a homeowner staring at a cracked seam, a sagging ceiling, or a room that never holds heat. We handle both, and we will tell you plainly when a repair makes more sense than a tear-out.

Open-Cell or Closed-Cell Foam? How We Decide

The first question on almost any spray foam insulation job is which foam to use. The two behave differently, and the right pick depends on where it is going and what problem you are solving.

Open-cell vs. closed-cell spray foam — how we spec each one
Open-Cell FoamClosed-Cell Foam
Density (approx.)~0.5 lb/ft³~2.0 lb/ft³
R-value per inchR-3.5 to R-3.8R-6 to R-7
Air sealYesYes
Vapor / moisture barrierNoYes (acts as a vapor retarder)
Adds structural rigidityNoYes
Where we use itInterior walls, sound dampening, attics with room to fillCrawl spaces, rim joists, roof decks, below-grade and exterior
Relative costLowerHigher

For most Boise attics with depth to work with, open-cell foam gives a strong air seal at a lower cost. In a crawl space or on a roof deck, where moisture control and rigidity matter, we lean toward closed-cell foam.

Field note: The most common failure we get called to fix is not bad foam — it is good foam sprayed over a dirty or damp substrate. Foam only bonds as well as the surface under it. Before we spray a rim joist or crawl space, we make sure it is dry and clean, because a re-spray costs far more than doing it right the first time.

Repair or Replace? A Quick Way to Tell

Not every drywall problem needs new board. This is the logic our estimators walk through on a site visit:

  • Hairline cracks, nail pops, or a small hole — a drywall repair and re-finish is usually all it takes.
  • Sagging, soft spots, or staining — there is likely moisture behind it, and the affected section should come out rather than get skinned over.
  • Repeated cracking in the same seam — the cause is often framing movement, not the drywall, so patching alone will not hold.
  • Damage spanning most of a room, or a remodel — full replacement is usually cheaper per square foot than piecemeal patching.

Why a Tight Envelope Matters in the Treasure Valley

Boise-area homes take a beating from the swing between hot, dry summers and cold high-desert nights. A house that is well-sealed holds temperature instead of fighting the HVAC all day. On new construction around Meridian, Eagle, and Nampa, we see how much a properly sealed envelope changes that first energy bill. On older homes closer to downtown Boise, adding foam to an unfinished attic or crawl space is often the single highest-return upgrade an owner can make before winter.

Drywall and Spray Foam Questions We Hear Most

How much does spray foam insulation cost in Boise?

It depends on the square footage, the foam type, and the thickness, so an honest number starts with a walk-through. Closed-cell costs more per board foot than open-cell but delivers a higher R-value in less space. We give free, itemized estimates — and we break down the cost factors here if you want to understand the math first.

Do you handle both residential and commercial work?

Yes. We run residential drywall and remodels alongside commercial drywall and new-construction projects for builders and general contractors across the valley.

How long does drywall finishing take?

For a standard room, hang to paint-ready is typically a few days once we account for mud and dry time between coats. We do not rush a finish — proper drying between coats is what prevents the cracks and telegraphing that show up months later.
